In every community, there are individuals who quietly step forward when leadership is needed most. Narendra Bhana is one such leader, steady, committed, and deeply driven by a sense of service that goes well beyond titles.
For nearly two decades, Narendra has been at the heart of the Indian community in Aotearoa New Zealand, helping shape its growth, unity, and direction. His journey is not defined by a single role, but by a consistent willingness to take responsibility and deliver outcomes that benefit the wider community.
At the Auckland Indian Association Inc., one of the country’s oldest and most respected Indian organisations, Narendra has served across multiple leadership roles, Treasurer, Board Trustee, Vice President, and President. Each position reflected a different phase of contribution, from strengthening financial discipline and governance to driving strategic growth and community engagement. During his presidency, the Association saw tangible progress, not only in its financial stability but also in its ability to serve a growing and diverse membership. His leadership style has always been practical and inclusive focused on getting things done while bringing people together.
His influence extends nationally through the New Zealand Indian Central Association Inc. (NZICA), the umbrella body representing Indian communities across New Zealand. As President from 2022 to 2025, Narendra led the organisation through a period of renewed purpose and visibility. He worked to strengthen governance frameworks, build stronger relationships with government and community stakeholders, and position NZICA as a credible voice for the Indian diaspora. Today, as Immediate Past President and Chairman of the Policy and Governance Committee, he continues to guide the organisation’s future, ensuring that its structures remain robust and fit for the next generation.
One of Narendra’s most significant contributions has been his ability to unite. Through his leadership of the Auckland Indian Diaspora Group, he brought together more than 50 Indian community organisations under a single collaborative platform. This was no small achievement. It required trust, diplomacy, and a clear vision, creating a space where organisations could work collectively while maintaining their individual identities. The result has been stronger coordination for national celebrations, community responses, and shared initiatives that reflect the true diversity of the Indian community in New Zealand.
What sets Narendra apart is not just the number of roles he has held, but the intent behind them. He has consistently focused on building systems that last. Whether it is improving governance practices, advocating for transparent processes, or ensuring that organisations are better prepared for the future. His work during key moments, including national events and community challenges, reflects a calm and thoughtful approach, always putting the collective interest first.
Beyond formal positions, Narendra is widely regarded as someone who leads with integrity and accessibility. He is known for mentoring emerging leaders, encouraging collaboration, and fostering a culture where service is valued above recognition. His ability to connect with people from grassroots volunteers to senior leaders has been central to his effectiveness.
In 2025, his contributions were formally recognised by the New Zealand Government with the King’s Service Medal (KSM), an honour that reflects his longstanding commitment to community service. This recognition simply affirms that his leadership has made a meaningful and lasting difference.
Narendra Bhana’s story is ultimately one of service with purpose. He has helped shape not just organisations, but a stronger, more connected community. Through steady leadership, thoughtful governance, and a genuine commitment to bringing people together, he has left an enduring mark on the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
The Bharat Gaurav Award 2026 recognises individuals who carry the spirit of India beyond its borders and contribute meaningfully to society. Narendra Bhana embodies that spirit through action, humility, and a lifelong dedication to community.
